2D Shape of the Week

This is one of my favorite add-in's that I have during my calendar time because ever since I have done it I really notice my kids know their shapes and all their attributes.  It seriously promotes shape talk.  I will hear them out at recess telling me they see pentagons, trapezoids, hexagons... OH MY!

Colored ink is not cheap so I don't like to reprint these each year.  I laminated them and then each week I'll just write on our new sign with a dry erase marker (or you could do vis-a-vis marker).

Here is my rundown:

Monday: We talk about what the shape name is

Tuesday: We discuss how many sides this shape has

Wednesday:  We discuss how many vertices this shape has.

Thursday:  We talk angles!

Friday: We talk about where we see this shape in the real world and then I have them practice drawing this shape.

I always have my little "guides" next to the shape of the week reminding the kids what sides, vertices, and angles are.  These come in handy too!  They are also included in this packet along with an answer key for all the shapes properties.

Pick one up at my store.  And stay tuned because I'm working on a 3D Shape of the Week set too!
